EMS controller explained: what an energy management system does

An energy management system (EMS) controls your solar system, battery, EV charger and heat pump as one system, optimized for the goal you set: lower costs, higher revenues, grid limits, self-consumption, or a combination. Reduxi runs this on a compact controller that you install once and manage in an app.

01What is an EMS?

What is an EMS?

An EMS is the control layer of your energy system. It reads what you produce and consume, then decides when each device runs. Solar inverters, batteries, EV chargers and heat pumps each work well alone; the EMS makes them work together.

At home, the same system is called a home energy management system (HEMS). It controls the PV system, battery, EV charger and heat pump of a household, so a home with solar power uses more of its own electricity.

The device that runs the EMS is the EMS controller. It sits on site, connects to your devices and meter, and sends control commands. Without it, every device follows its own rules and none of them knows what the others do.

Without an EMS every device follows its own rules; with an EMS one controller runs all devices for one goal

02What the controller does

What does the Reduxi EMS controller do for you?

It optimizes your system for the goal you set. You decide what matters: lower costs, higher revenues, staying within grid limits, more self-consumption, earning from ancillary services, or a combination. The controller runs every device to reach that goal.

Cost and revenue

The controller charges the battery and the EV when electricity is cheap, and uses stored energy when it is expensive. Reduxi supports fixed prices, Time-of-Use tariffs and dynamic 15-minute Day-Ahead (SPOT) prices.

Grid limits

The controller reduces or switches off consumers so your power limit is not exceeded, and your export limit stays in force. PV production can be reduced when needed.

Self-consumption

Solar power that would go to the grid goes into the battery, the car or the heat pump first. You buy less from the grid and depend less on price swings.

Ancillary services

Connect the controller to the Reduxi FLEX platform and earn from ancillary services. FLEX aggregates sites and connects them to the transmission system operator. Ancillary services are live in Slovenia, where the Slovenian TSO ELES has activated Reduxi’s aFRR.

03How it works

How does an EMS controller work?

1. The controller measures

It reads your grid meter, for example through the Reduxi P1 Ultra Plus or P1 Ultra Pro meter reader, and the data of your connected devices. Live values appear in the Reduxi web and mobile app.

2. It applies a strategy and controls

Control runs locally on the controller, so your system keeps working when the internet connection drops. The internet connection is only necessary for using the AI Energy Manager and for the connection to the FLEX platform for ancillary services.

04AI Energy Manager

From rules to AI: the AI Energy Manager

A standard strategy follows rules you set, such as charging the battery when the price falls below a threshold. The Reduxi AI Energy Manager adds prediction. It forecasts your consumption, solar production and electricity prices, and updates its plan every 15 minutes.

When something unexpected happens, such as a sudden EV charge or cloud cover, the plan is recalculated. The AI Energy Manager is available as a premium upgrade for Reduxi Controller users with battery systems. Details are on the AI Energy Manager page.

05Choose your controller

Which Reduxi controller fits your site?

Reduxi Controller (Standard)

The Reduxi Controller (Standard) fits homes and small commercial sites. It connects and controls solar, battery, EV chargers and heat pumps. It is intended to control up to 10 devices, with smaller BESS (up to around 250 kWh capacity).

Reduxi Industrial

Reduxi Industrial fits larger commercial, industrial and utility-scale sites. It is intended for sites with more than 10 to 15 connected devices, a bigger BESS and a wide variety of ports: Digital I/O (6 digital inputs, 4 relay outputs), RS485 (2x), CAN, M-Bus, 2 Ethernet ports (LAN and WAN), WiFi and LTE. It combines battery coordination between BMS and PCS with full site energy management in one DIN-rail device. Read more on the Reduxi BESS controller and EMS page.

06Compatibility

Works with your devices

Reduxi is manufacturer-independent and supports almost 3,000 compatible devices from 250+ manufacturers. Reduxi reads and controls batteries from Huawei, Deye, sonnen, Sungrow, Fox ESS, GoodWe, SolarEdge, SMA, Victron, BYD and Fronius. Check your devices in the compatible devices list.

FAQ

What is a home energy management system (HEMS)?

A HEMS is an EMS for a household. It connects your PV system, battery, EV charger and heat pump and runs them for the goal you set, for example lower electricity costs or more self-consumption. The Reduxi Controller (Standard) is made for this.

What is the difference between an EMS and a battery inverter?

The inverter converts power for one device. The EMS decides for all devices when to charge, discharge, consume or pause. One EMS controls inverters, batteries, chargers and heat pumps from different manufacturers.

Do I need a battery for an EMS?

No. An EMS controls EV chargers, heat pumps and other flexible consumers without a battery. A battery adds more room to shift energy and cover peaks.

Can an EMS controller keep my export limit?

Yes. The Reduxi Controller keeps the export limit in force, and PV production can be reduced when needed.

Does the EMS still work without internet?

Control runs on site on the controller. The funding programmes for energy management in Austria require exactly this: the control must run on site, even without a permanent internet connection.

Are there any subsidies available for EMS?

Yes. Austria funds energy management for households and businesses. The funding page lists four required functions: active device control, dynamic price signals, metering at the grid connection and load management. Reduxi covers all four; see the funding page for programmes and deadlines.

How do I monitor and connect my EMS to other systems?

You monitor and control your devices in the Reduxi web and mobile app. Reduxi also offers a REST API, an MQTT API and webhooks for integration.
